In a folk song club in Ishigaki, Yaeyama, the southernmost group of islands in Japan, is an Englishman who performs accompanying himself on the sanshin.
His name is Matt Gillan.
A PhD student of London University (SOAS) music department, he is currently affiliated as a researcher to Okinawa University of the Arts.

Currently
a PhD student at London University (SOAS) music department,
and affiliated as a researcher at Okinawa University of the
Arts. First visited Japan in 1995 as an English teacher in Western
Japan. Came to Okinawa in July of this year to research his
PhD thesis topic of Yaeyama Folk Music. Currently recieves tuition
from the Ishigaki based folk music singer and owner of the folk
music club "Asadoya", Asato Isamu. Besides taking
the stage at "Asadoya", he is based during the day
at the Ishigaki prefectural library.(Japanese) |
